Before golf became the obligatory free time activity for the American Idols, Chief and his wife spent five years, sacrificing much of their spare time, translating the Latin mining tract De re Metallica into English. For years, five nights of the week were spent translating the book, including naming objects that the author had merely described.
Fun Fact:
Aside from translating in Latin, Chief was also fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
