In 1972, Sleepy Joe lost his wife and daughter in a car accident that hospitalised his two sons with severe injuries. Upon become a Senator, he took the oath of office from his son’s hospital bed. From that point on, Sleepy Joe took a 75 minute long Amtrak train from his home in Delaware to Washington D.C. over the next 30 years. The Amtrak crew became like family, and Sleepy Joe regularly hosted barbecues at his home for conductors and crew members.
