The former general was 46 years old and had never held an elected office when he became an idol, making him the youngest of the American Idols elected at the time. His inexperience was a factor in his tumultuous eight-years amid Reconstruction, but this wouldn’t be the last time a Washington outsider had a tumultuous tenure as one of the American Idols. As a side note, he actually is buried in his tomb!
