Old Rough and Ready

1849 – 1850

Stop your nonsense and drink your whiskey!
— Old Rough and Ready

Did you know?

On July 4, 1850, Old Rough and Ready celebrated Independence Day at the Washington Monument. He snacked on cherries, undoubtedly paired with whisky, that are believed to have bacteria on them. He got sick and died 5 days later, but it surely wasn’t from the whiskey.⠀

Fun Fact:

Old Rough and Ready married Margaret (Peggy) Mackall Smith, together they raised six children but only one survived into adulthood. Seemingly they did no do such a good job ‘raising’ children.
